The record is a complete redo of the band's (formerly called "Soko") 1996 popular release, In November Sunlight. All of the tracks were recast for this muscular new trio and once again fleshed out by guest performances from some of the world's finest musicians: Grammy award-winning cellist, David Darling; return appearances from Dave Matthews, the late Leroi Moore, and Tim Reynolds; guitar sensation Steve Kimock; the celebrated cross-cultural saxophonist, George Brooks; leading New York wind master, Jay Rodriguez; jazz saxophonist Charles Owens; and a few others. The band had long believed that, despite its commercial success, the first CD did not serve the compositions adequately, so this project was undertaken with great enthusiasm and intensity. The hope is that fans of the band will find something to enjoy in these new takes on familiar tunes.
Two sax-focused bonus tracks complete the offering: And Yet Your Smile features the silky, effortless tenor saxophone of Leroi Moore and Nightfall, a composition co-written by Ross and Sokolowski for the Soko:Two sessions showcases tenorist Charles Owens holding down the melody.
The album was expertly mixed by longtime collaborator Rob Evans, and the disc was once again mastered by the great Bob Katz.
You can hear the title track, also featuring the soaring saxophone of Mr. Moore, for free here.
