Album Clips:
The story of this record is the stupendous 1906 Steinway B piano used in the recording. Lovingly cared for by the folks at the now-closed Sorcerer Sound in Soho, NYC; this piano sounds like an orchestra. The harmonics are so well-aligned, and the tone and power of the instrument so perfectly regulated, it was an absolute dream to play. Somewhere, there lives an incredibly lucky human being who owns and plays this impeccable, magical instrument.
On a cold winter's day in 2001, Michael flew up from Charlottesville, spent the day exploring this magnificent instrument, and returned in time to play his regular Monday night ‘space piano’ gig on the banged-up, barely tuned spinet at Miller’s Restaurant (also magnificent in its own way).
It’s not a perfect set of performances by any means, but there’s a very real sense in which the piano makes it perfect. Let its vibrations rain down through through your speakers or headphones. And wherever you are dear instrument, long may you sing.
